Classical Guitar Technique: American Guild of Luthiers Tuning System
Here is a synopsis of the AGL tuning system:
A. Match the sound of string 6/open to an electronic tuner or other reference pitch
B. Play string 6/harmonic at fret 5, tune string 1/open to match
C. Play string 6/harmonic at fret 12, tune string 4/fret 2 to match
D. Play string 4/harmonic at fret 12, tune string 2/fret 3 to match
E. Play string 4/harmonic at fret 12, tune string 3/fret 7 to match
F. Double check: play string 3/harmonic at fret 12, which should match string 1/fret 3. If it doesn't, string 3 may not playing in tune at fret 7. This is a common problem, which can be corrected by having a skilled classical guitar builder adjust the nut or saddle to compensate for the intonation error. Note that there may be other intonation errors on your guitar that need similar correction.
G. Play string 3/fret 2, tune string 5/harmonic at fret 12 to match.
