Stephen Kakos Luthier Concert Classical Guitars

New 2009 Cedar and Spruce top models

Stephen Kakos has been building fine concert classical guitars full-time since 1975.  Kakos concentrates specifically on classical acoustics, although he has built a few flamenco guitars on request. His Standard Model consists of Indian rosewood back and sides, Engelmann spruce or cedar top, mahogany or Spanish cedar neck, Sloan cast bronze tuners, and a French Polish finish. In addition to guitar building, Kakos performs repairs. Loacated in Mound, Minnesota, this builder is concerned that his guitars are built to withstand higher or lower than normal humidity levels. His shop is kept at 40% humidity.

One player's description of his Kakos guitar:

Kakos likes to build some of cedar's characteristics in his spruce tops (and vice versa) so this guitar has very rich, colorful tonality across all ranges. Very even across the treble, mid-range, and bass ranges and nice separation. Projection is great, and the warmth of his guitars is very apparent in this guitar.

Kakos' guitars are played by guitarists worldwide.  Founded in 1986, the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet members play his guitars on their recordings and performances.  The MGQ has been heard on National Public Radio's Performance Today and its first two CDs - New Works for Guitar Quartet and Over Land and Sea - received international critical acclaim.  Their last CD had a fantastic recommendation in Classical Guitar magazine.  Click the link below for more information on this world-renowned performing/recording group:
